For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Ephesians 6:12
The story of
Dr. Bobby Brewer
Doctorate of Ministry, Phoenix Seminary
Master of Divinity, Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary
Dr. Bobby Brewer has served on the pastoral staff of several evangelical Bible churches in the Phoenix area and co-hosted a radio talk show for fifteen years. He is the author of Postmodernism: What You Should Know and Do About It and served as a contributor for a layman’s commentary on the Book of Ecclesiastes.
As a long-time resident of Arizona, UFOs regularly seem to show up on both the cultural and physical radar. It’s next to impossible to visit Sedona without seeing an alien figurine adorning a New Age gift shop.
A film, Fire in the Sky, was based upon the abduction experience of a resident of Snowflake, and of course, there was the Phoenix Lights incident of 1997 that had the whole city asking, “Did you see that last night? What was it?”
For the first time, I was being asked what the implications of extraterrestrials visiting earth would have for humanity, religion, and specifically Christianity. Does Christianity have an answer?
Should the Christian community even bother to address the presumably preposterous yet pressing issue? What should a parent teach their child about aliens? How can our youth workers answer the E.T. questions of their teenage congregations?
My first discussion about the topic of UFOs was with my parents. My father served in the U.S. Navy for twenty years. When I was nine years old, I remember him coming home one evening. As usual, I had run in to greet him. However, I noticed that he was in a very deep conversation with my mother and had a very disturbed look on his face. Seeing that I was unsettled by my father’s disposition, my mother, a born-again Christian, said, “Son, your dad saw a flying saucer.”
At this time, my childhood friends and I were obsessed with building Aurora monster models (Godzilla, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, etc.), and we lived our lives around a tv show entitled Kolchak: The Night Stalker starring Darrin McGavin, about a Chicago reporter who had regular run-ins with vampires, monsters, etc. Thus, I was excited to get more information from my father, but it was very obvious it was something he didn’t care to discuss. Nevertheless, it was a moment etched in my mind, and while we were having coffee one morning in 2021, I brought up the topic and asked if he remembered the incident. He did.
Be ready with an answer
What implications would a government disclosure affirming the existence of intelligent extraterrestrial life have for humanity and religion, specifically Christianity?
Is this whole thing a hoax?
How should you address these seemingly preposterous claims that we’re not alone?
